UT building fire billows smoke, but only damages ventilation unit
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) A blaze in a utility building at the University of Tennessee produced a lot of smoke but no danger to students or other structures on the Knoxville campus, officials said Wednesday. The fire was isolated to a 30-by-30-foot, stand-alone chiller unit that provides heat, air-conditioning and ventilation to education, health sciences and computer sciences programs in the Claxton Complex. .
Web gamblers betting on Barack Obama
If you needed one more sign that Barack Obama is on a roll, the futures trading markets have decided he's a very good bet. According to several overseas online exchanges, Obama is now a virtual lock to win all the upcoming primaries, including Texas and Ohio — the states Hillary Clinton is pinning her hopes on. And he's the even-money favorite to be elected President in November. "Obama has all the momentum, and the betting odds reflect that," said Steve Budin, an oddsmaker at sportsinfo.com who puts Obama's likelihood of being President at 4-5, with Clinton and John McCain both at 3-2. And the payoffs can rival any race track. Gabriel Weil, 22-year-old college student, has made about $1,500, much of it by shorting Rudy Giuliani — selling shares in the former mayor that he did not yet own and assuming he could buy them later at a lower price and pocket the difference.
Student's death at NYOS School investigated
For the first time, state agencies are speaking about the investigation into a little boy's fatal injury at school. Friends and family are preparing to lay 7-year-old Tevin Park-Flowers to rest, more than a week after a teacher found him suspended from a bathroom hook at NYOS Charter School.Police were first on scene when the teacher found Tevin in cardiac arrest, but the investigation extends beyond the Austin Police Department."Anytime there's a concern with a possibility of abuse or neglect at school... CPS conducts that investigation," said Chris Van Deusen, spokesperson for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, the parent agency of CPS.Like police, CPS is interviewing students, staff, and parents."We operate completely on the civil side of the law, and it's really about making sure children are safe," said Van Deusen. It will likely take more than two months for CPS to complete its report, which will be sent to NYOS and state education authorities, including the Texas Education Agency.
Tata working on ultra-green 'air car'
A car that runs on air and releases no pollutants into the atmosphere at low speeds could be offered for sale in India as soon as this year. The three-seater fibreglass OneCAT weighs just 350kg and is expected to be priced at about £2,500. The technology under its bonnet is backed by Tata, the Indian conglomerate that sent a shockwave through the auto industry last month when it unveiled the world's cheapest car, the £1,250 Nano. Refuelling involves topping-up on compressed air, which is used to power the OneCAT's piston engine. In a couple of minutes - and at a cost of as little as £1 - the vehicle is ready to travel another 200 to 300 kilometres, its inventors say. The vehicle, which burns small amounts of conventional fuels at higher speeds, has been developed by Moteur Development International (MDI), a French-based, family-owned group that has been working on a roadworthy "air car" for the past decade.
LR2 opens more doors to Land Rover
Land Rover, home of the full-size, $80,000, V-8 Range Rover SUV, now offers a more blue-collar compact LR2 at $35,000 for 6 cylinders. Yup, for a paltry $35,000 you can own a vehicle from the same company as Queen Elizabeth's. And as it now sells an "inexpensive" sport-utility, Land Rover itself is being sold, along with another prestigious British nameplate Jaguar. .
