Kids Huff Freon to Get High

CARBONDALE, Ill. - During these 'dog days of summer' air conditioning units are working overtime trying to keep homes and offices cooled down.

But many of those air conditioning units are becoming the target of kids wanting to drain the freon gas from inside and inhale it, sometimes with deadly results.

"They feel a euphoria, light-headiness and they may pass out. But it's that euphoria that they're going after. Unfortunately what these kids don't know is there is long term damage to the body from breathing in freon gas," said Doctor Donna Carney at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Authorities say the way the kids are using the gas to get high is by placing a plastic bag over their head. Then they fill the bag with freon gas. It's heavier than oxygen so it forces the oxygen out of the bag, leaving only the dangerous gas.

It's also a good idea to do check out the candidates' websites. They all lay out their views on the issues, so you can make an informed decision!

Thursday's Huckabee event was a rally at the Stoney Creek Inn in Rothschild. It was in a reasonably-sized ballroom, and about 300 people packed in, with the media (local people like us, and national crews that travel with Huckabee) on risers at the back of the room. We did a live shot for NewsChannel 7 at 5:00, and Mr. Huckabee started his speech almost right after that.

He spoke until about 5:30 (it was a version of his stump speech), then a guy with his campaign told us the former governor was going to have “Media Availability" in another room. That's basically a little press conference when we can ask him just about whatever we want!

Huckabee was very personable.

Architects Who Add Sex Appeal To Sustainable Designs

From Berlin's Reichstag dome to London's Swiss Re building, no contemporary architect has left a greater impact on the modern city skyline than Norman Foster, whose high-tech modernism reinvented the skyscraper. What is less known is that he is also a pioneer of sustainable design. The Reichstag dome is powered by vegetable oil, while the Swiss Re building, nicknamed the "gherkin," uses a system of gardens to promote natural ventilation. Another landmark project, the 47-story HSBC headquarters in Hong Kong, a modular glass-and-steel structure finished in 1986, channels natural light throughout the building and has adaptable office spaces. Mr. Foster's Beijing Airport terminal building, to open next month, will use natural light and ventilation, and despite its size -- it will be the world's largest terminal at a million square meters -- is designed on what the architect calls a human scale.

Speaker talks energy savings

ESCANABA — Energy audits and energy-efficiency upgrades are a great way for businesses to save money as well as positively impact the environment, said a guest speaker at Escanaba's Economic Summit at city hall Wednesday. “Energy audits are a great investment because you need to learn, in all these areas, where you can save," said Kevin Cook, president of G-ENERGY and a board member of Michigan Green. Cook said right now is the “perfect storm of energy" because economics are really important, people are interested in the green movement, and businesses are seeking energy independence. “Energy's going to always be a major issue," he said. “It's a great way to save." Cook said energy audits are a way that businesses — including stores, restaurants, warehouses or industries — can save energy which results in bottom-line savings.
